Who I Am
🌍I’m a native Spanish teacher from Argentina! My name is Ignacio, but my last name isn’t Baires — it’s just a shortened form of “Buenos Aires,” the city where I was born and where I live.
How I Became a Spanish Teacher
🎓 I studied Literature and Linguistics at the University of Buenos Aires, where I graduated as a teacher. Later, I completed a postgraduate degree in Teaching Spanish as a Second Language, also at the University of Buenos Aires.
🧑🏫Before specializing in teaching Spanish as a second language, I worked for a few years as a Language and Literature teacher at the secondary level. This is how my teenage students see me:
For the past three years, I’ve been teaching Spanish online to non-native speakers. I have worked with dozens of students from various countries, ranging from absolute beginners to advanced levels.
Me Outside the Classroom
🎨🎵📚 Apart from teaching Spanish, what do I like? Literature and languages, of course; movies and playing chess (though I’m terrible at it). I’m involved in two UBA research projects on Renaissance literature. I really enjoy writing and helping my friends with academic writing. I’m also interested in astronomy and attempting to play the piano (I’m terrible at that too, unsurprisingly…). When I’m not at the gym, I’m making lists, of course.
My Teaching Philosophy
My approach to teaching has been shaped by my own experience as a language learner, both through formal study (like English, French, Latin, and Ancient Greek) and through extracurricular courses (such as Italian, German, and Persian).
What I discovered along the way is that the most meaningful and motivating learning moments happened when I was actively engaged in the process—not simply being told how things work, but being guided to think things through and reach understanding myself. Those lessons were not only more effective, but also much more enjoyable.
This is the spirit I bring to my own teaching. I strive to create an environment where students take an active role in their learning. I guide them to observe, infer, and make sense of the language themselves, while also providing the tools they need to build autonomy and long-term confidence.
